Bhutan - The Land of Thunder Dragon

Bhutan – The Land of Thunder Dragon is also known as Kingdom of Bhutan. A beautiful country located in the Eastern Himalayas with magnificent landscape. Bhutan is a neighboring country of India and can be entered through four Indian states namely West Bengal, Assam, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh.

Bhutan has a King (Dragon King). The Bhutanese monarchy was established in 1907 and was under the control of the Wangchuk family. In 2008, the Constitution of 2008 came into effect and this ends the monarchy system.  Now the present King, His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel is the Head of State while the prime minister of Bhutan acts as executive and head of government in a parliamentary democracy. 

In recent survey, Bhutan is said to be happiest country in the world. The Buddhist culture in Bhutan is very rich. Buddhism is the major religion in Bhutan. The country is small and is a smallest state in Asia but the nature and beauty of the country is vast. The land consists mostly of steep and high mountains crisscrossed by a network of swift rivers, which form deep valleys before draining into the Indian plains.

Bhutan have five seasons viz. summer, monsoon, autumn, winter and spring. Western Bhutan has the heavier monsoon rains; southern Bhutan has hot humid summers and cool winters; central and eastern Bhutan is temperate and drier than the west with warm summers and cool winters.

Bhutan has dense forest and wildlife. The Bengal tiger, clouded leopard, sloth bear as well as some rare species such as the golden langur can be found. More than 770 species of bird have been recorded in Bhutan. The globally endangered white-winged duck has been also recorded.

Thimphu - The Capital

Thimphu city of Bhutan Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan is a beautiful city of Bhutan. Beside beautiful nature and landscape, the residential and commercial buildings are also worth to see. The culture of Bhutan is fully reflected in Thimphu in respect of literature, religion, customs, and national dress code, the monastic practices of the monasteries, music, dance, literature and in the media.

Thimphu is situated in the western central part of Bhutan. Thimphu is the third highest capital in the world by altitude and is spread over an altitudinal range between 2,248 metres and 2,648 metres.
Thimphu contains most of the important political buildings in Bhutan, including the National Assembly of the newly formed parliamentary democracy and Dechencholing Palace, the official residence of the King, located to the north of the city.

Thimphu experiences both wet and dry seasons. Wet season runs from May through September and dry season covers the remainder of the year. Snow fall occurs in Thimpu city commonly in January and February.

Tiger's Nest - The Sacred Monastery

Tiger's Nest Temple Tiger’s Nest Monastery is a tourist’s favorite spot. The view is just magnificent. The spot where is the Monastery stood is just breath taking.

Tiger’s Nest Monastery is also known as the Taktsang Palphug Monastery and one of the sacred site of Buddhist. It is said that Guru Padmasambhava have medidated here for three years, three months, three weeks, three days and three hours. It is also said that Guru Padmasambhava has arrived here on back of tigress and hence the name Tiger’s Nest.

The monastery is located 10 kilometres to the north of Paro and hangs on a precarious cliff at 3,120 metres, about 900 metres above the Paro valley. The rock slopes are very steep (almost vertical) and the monastery buildings are built into the rock face.

Tourist can reach this place from Paro or from Lakhang (village level monastery). This is a view point for visitors. The trek beyond this point is very scenic.

Dochula Pass - 108 Chortens

bhutan dochula pass Dochula Pass is a pass with 108 stupas or chortens. These stupas were built as memorial in honour of the Bhutanese soldier who were killed in December 2003 battle against Assamese insurgents from India.
The chortens are formally consecrated and sanctified with religious rites held on 19th and 20th June of every year. The chortens are built in three layers, the first lowest level layer has forty five chortens, the second has thirty six and the top layer has twenty seven built around the main chorten. The construction of these chortens was done as per religiously ordained ritualistic procedures.

Dochula Pass is on the road from Thimphu city to Punakha. Apart from the chortens there is a monastery called the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang (temple), built in honour of the fourth King of Bhutan. Every year an annual festival Dochula Druk Wangyel Festival is organised here.

Paro - Historic Valley of Bhutan

Paro is bordered by Haa District to the West, Tibet to the north, Thimphu to the east and Chuka district to the south. The local language in Paro is Dzongkha which is also national language of Bhutan.

Punakha Dzong - The Majestic Dzong

The Dzong is located in the Punakha – Wangdue valley and is constructed by Ngawang Namgyal, first Zhabdrung Rinpoche in 1637 – 38. The dzongs houses the sacred relics of the southern Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, including the Rangjung Kasarpani and the sacred remains of Ngawang Namgyal and the tertön Pema Lingpa

The Dzong have many legendary stories to tell. Punakha Dzong is most majestic dzong in Bhutan. It is a six-storied structure with a central tower or utse at an average elevation of 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) with a scenic, mountainous background. The materials used in building the Dzong consisted of compacted earth, stones and timber in doors and windows

The Dzong can be visit during opening hours ie 8 am to 5 pm.

Chomolhari - The Sacred Mountain

chomolhari temple Chomolhari is a mountain in the Himalaya and is also known as the bride of Kangchenjunga. The river Paro Chu which flows in Paro district of Bhutan begins from here.
Religious practitioners and pilgrims from Bhutan visit here for Jomolhari Temple. There are several other sacred sites near Jomolhari Temple, including meditation caves of Milarepa and Gyalwa Lorepa. Within an hour's walk up from the temple is Tseringma Lhatso, the "spirit lake" of Tsheringma

The mountain is sacred to Tibetan Buddhist and it is believed that no one climb this mountain. Many mountaineers have tried and lost their lives.
