Darjeeling is also a district of state West Bengal. The name Darjeeling comes from the Tibetan word dorje, meaning the thunderbolt sceptre of the Hindu deity Indra, and ling, a place or land. It is located in the Lesser Himalaya at an elevation of 6,700 ft (2,042.2 m).
The hills of Darjeeling are part of the Lesser Himalaya. The soil is chiefly composed of sandstone and conglomerate formations, which are the solidified and upheaved detritus of the great range of Himalaya.
Darjeeling has a temperate climate. The highest rainfall occurs in July. Snowfall happens in Darjeeling in the month of December and January.

Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park or Darjeeling Zoo is the largest high altitude zoo in India and it hosts some rare and endangered animals such as Himalayan Wolf, Red Panda, Gorals, Siberain Tigers and snow leopard as well as variety of endangered birds. The zoo also serves as breeding spot of those endangered animals. The goal of the zoo is to study and preserve Himalayan fauna.
Darjeeling zoo was established on August 14, 1958. The park is named after Padmaja Naidu, daughter of Sarojini Naidu, in 1975 by Indira Gandhi (the prime minister of India) during her visit to the park.
The total area of zoo is 67.56 acre and is at elevation of 7000 feet. If you want to catch glimpse of rare and endangered animals then visit to Darjeeling zoo is must. The zoo can be entered from 8.30 am to 4pm and remain closed on Thursday.
If you in Darjeeling then don’t forget the Tiger Hill, a famous spot for tourist. Darjeeling’s tiger Hill is famous for its Railway Station – Ghum, highest railway station in India and is situated at an altitude of 2,258 metres (7,407 ft) and for beautiful panaromic view of Darjeeling and grand view of Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world. The world’s highest peak i.e. Mount Everest can be also seen from here if have clear weather.
Tiger Hill is also famous for beautiful sunrise scene. Thousands of tourists wake up early in the morning and rush to Tiger Hill for a glimpse of the famed sunrise. On a clear day, Kurseong is visible to the south and in the distance, along with Teesta River, Mahanada River, Balason River and Mechi River meandering down to the south.
Tiger Hill is 11 km from the town of Darjeeling and can be reached either by jeep or by foot.
Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary is the oldest wildlife sanctuaries of India in Darjeeling. It covers an area of 39 square kilometer. The elevation ranges from 1,500 to 2,600 m (4,900 to 8,500 ft).
The sanctuary has very beautiful nature’s beauty and scenery. The sanctuary has some beautiful lakes which also provide water to Darjeeling residents. The Senchal lake inside the sanctuary is hot spot for tourist. One can witness the beauty of nature here.
Different types of High-altitude animals can be seen here such as barking deer, wild pig, himalayan black bear, leopard, jungle cat, common rhesus monkey, Assam macaque, Himalayan flying squirrel, etc. are found in their natural habitats. The sanctuary is also rich in bird life. To enter the sanctuary, one has to take permission from the ranger’s office. It is advised to take Guide along with. In monsoon the sanctuary remains closed and reopens in September.
Ghum is a hilly town in Darjeeling and is famous for Ghoom Railway Station of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the highest railway station in India. The hills have many other hot tourist spot which makes it more popular to tourist. It has a panoramic view of Mount Everest and Mt. Kangchenjunga together.
Ghum Monastery and the Batasia Loop is another popular tourist spot in Ghum. There is a 15 feet high statue of Buddha in Ghum Monastery. The monastery also contains images of Bhuddha’s disciples, Chenrezi and Chongapa. The Monastery was built in 1875 by Lama Sherab Gyatso and is the largest of the three monasteries in Ghum.
Batasia Loop, a popular tourist spot is a spiral railway created to lower the gradient of ascent of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. At this point, the track spirals around over itself through a tunnel and over a hilltop. There is also a war memorial, a 9 feet high bronze statue and a 30 feet high triangular granite cenotaph, made in memories of Gorkha soldiers of the Indian Army who have sacrificed their lives during Independence of India.
Rock Garden is popular tourist spot. The garden is about 10 kilometres from Darjeeling. The garden was constructed by the Gorkha Hill Council Tourism Department. The garden offers a beautiful view of a hill stream cascading over rocks along the slope, done up with flower gardens and sitting spaces at different levels. There also is a small lake. Chunnu Summer falls in the garden is very beautiful and looks more scenic on rainy days.
Ganga Maya Park is another tourist spot which is just 3 kilometres from the Rock Garden. The park has waterfall and circular lake with paddle boats.
Gorkha fold dances are performed in the park to entertain the tourist.
The entry to both parks requires entry ticket and remains open daily from 10 am to 4 pm.
Darjeeling Ropeway is popular in Darjeeling. It gives bird’s eye-view of whole Darjeeling. The scenery of hills and beauty of Darjeeling from a cable car is just fantastic and magnificent. The ropeway was first started in 1968. The ropeway went to and from from an elevation of 2134 mtrs in Darjeeling’s North Point (Singamari) to Singla Bazar. The journey took 45 minutes. The distance of whole journey is about 8 kilometres.
The ropeway passed over dense forests, mountain ridges, waterfalls, flowing rivers, green valleys and tea gardens. One can view the Great Rangeet flows from the glacial elevation of Kabru, in the lower regions of the Kanchenjunga (the world’s third highest peak), meeting first the Ramman and then the Little Rangeet further down. The beautiful Bijanbari valley with a river looks amazing from here.
The scenery from ropeway is just awesome and the cable cars sliding on the cable is itself breathtaking and fills with thrill.
The ropeway remains open throughout the year. The timing of availability to ticket at the ticket counter changes from season to season on basis of number of visitors.
